41 Gorgeous Blocks - Anyhoo: Some Songs From ‘99 To Now. CD
In 1999, when many young bands were "evolving" from pop-punk into emo and post-punk, 41 Gorgeous Blocks started an 11-year run, churning out upbeat, melodic, Lookout Records-fueled music, playing hundreds of shows across their home state of Texas — occasionally beyond — and self-releasing a steady stream of albums to the tune of five full-lengths and three EPs.
This fall, Mom’s Basement Records, in a joint- collaboration with Something To Do Records, will revive a piece of the 41GB story with the release of a retrospective album titled, "Anyhoo: Some Songs From ‘99 To Now.”
ANYHOO compiles some favorites from each of the 1999-2010 albums, as well as three tracks that were recorded (and expertly mixed by Davi Pacote) during the past few years by a reunited 41GB. The album cover, like most everything associated with the band, features the cartoon art of Bobby Riggle, the late brother of singer/guitarist, Matt. (The Riggles played together in the even earlier Texas punk outfit, Ed Banky’s Car — their lost 1996 album, along with a book, was released by Something To Do Records earlier this year.)
Also notable is the album cover's distinctive pea- (or puke-) green color, which pays direct homage to “Somery,” the 1991 compilation album of California punk legends, Descendents — quite fitting, considering two members of 41GB co-directed "Filmage," the 2014 documentary about the Descendents.
ANYHOO will be available on CD Oct. 6, which is also the night you can catch 41GB playing a live set at Mom's Basement Fest in Youngstown, Ohio. (Matt Riggle will also perform as a solo act in the festival’s Saturday brunch lineup.)
